Red Flags for Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders

  • Lips open/mouth breathing

  • Tongue visible at rest

  • TMJ Pain

  • Sleep difficulties, snoring

  • Persistent drooling

  • Teeth grinding

  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing

  • Extended bottle/pacifier use, persistent sucking habits (thumb/finger sucking)

  • Difficulty nasal breathing

  • Long facial growth, recessed chin

  • Frequently chapped lips

  • Crowded teeth, crooked teeth

  • Picky eating

  • Difficulty with focus/attention

  • Poor speech

  • Dark circles under the eyes

  • History of tongue or lip-tie



Signs and Symptoms of Tethered Oral Tissues

Infant and Mother Symptoms:

  • Painful nursing

  • Nipple damage

  • Plugged ducts/mastitis

  • Difficulty latching

  • Popping off the breast frequently

  • Falling asleep at the breast

  • Clicking while nursing

  • Colic/gas

  • Reflux

  • Choking/coughing/gagging

  • Upper lip blisters

  • Mouth open at rest/during sleep

  • Poor tongue movements

Child and Adult Symptoms:

  • Articulation disorder

  • Audible breathing

  • Bad breath

  • Bedwetting

  • Sleep disordered breathing

  • Cheek biting

  • Chewing on objects

  • Clenching teeth

  • History of feeding difficulties as infant

  • Neck pain

  • Feeding difficulties, food/texture aversion

  • Difficulty chewing and swallowing
